How We Review Security Tools
We evaluate security tools around practical risk reduction, usability, price, support, business fit, and the needs of small businesses and website owners.
1. Define the security problem
We begin by identifying the problem the reader needs to solve. A password manager, VPN, malware-removal service, WordPress security plugin, backup platform, and secure hosting service should not be evaluated against the same criteria.
2. Review protection capabilities
We examine the features that are relevant to the product category, such as authentication, malware defense, backups, encryption, firewall controls, privacy features, monitoring, recovery, team administration, and policy controls.
3. Assess usability
We consider how easily a small business owner, administrator, website manager, or team can deploy and maintain the tool. Setup, dashboards, documentation, browser or device support, alerts, administration, and workflow fit can all matter.
4. Compare pricing and limitations
We look beyond a headline price when possible. Important differences can include user limits, device limits, storage, business-only features, renewal costs, support levels, and features reserved for higher plans.
5. Consider support and documentation
Security tools are often most important when something goes wrong. We therefore consider the availability of setup guidance, documentation, support options, recovery information, and troubleshooting resources.
6. Identify the best-fit user
Rather than naming one universal winner, we aim to explain which type of reader may benefit most from each option and where a product may not be the right fit.
Commercial transparency
Some products may have affiliate or commercial relationships with Secure Business Guide. These relationships do not automatically determine review conclusions. See our Affiliate Disclosure and Product Review Policy.
